Bio-based plastics contribute to a reduced use of and dependence on fossil raw materials, which are only available to a limited extent.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere as they grow. By using these crops to create biobased plastic products, greenhouse gases are removed from the atmosphere.
Since many bioplastics can be mechanically recycled in existing recycling plants, they have the potential to contribute to an improved eco-balance. For example, they can first be used for products and then be used to generate regenerative energy at the end of the product's life.
Plants used for industrial purposes can also be grown on soils that are not suitable for food crops. In this way, they do not displace food crops and thus improve biodiversity.
